Philadelphia Real Estate Blog – 30th Street StationPhiladelphia Real Estate Blog – 30th Street Station2Name Philadelphia’s Next Great Public Space! – Philadelphia’s next great public space is coming to 30th Street Station and it needs a name.
The area immediately surrounding 30th Street Station, while an important gateway to University City and the entire Philadelphia region, has long been among the least hospitable pedestrian landscapes in University City. The site is adjacent to the second busiest train station in the country, between two magnificent historic buildings, and within 1200 feet of over 16,000 jobs. Thanks to the collaboration of a group of stakeholders – including Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell, the Planning Commission, the Streets Department, Amtrak, Brandywine Realty Trust, the Schuylkill River Development Corporation, University City institutions and many others – the outer parking lane along Market Street is being reclaimed as a 40 foot wide sidewalk as part of a broader PennDOT project and will be complete by Labor Day weekend.
University City District believes that PennDOT’s work will literally lay the foundation for creating an inviting, animated public place, with amenities such as abundant and comfortable seating, sun and shade, trees and plantings. We are inspired by the Project for Public Spaces’ “lighter quicker cheaper” placemaking interventions as well as many examples in New York City, where public spaces have been developed by methodically taking small, incremental steps in order to determine what works best rather than beginning with large capital expenses. While we envision a capital-intensive future phase of development with elements such as food kiosks, additional plantings, and a permanent landscaped buffer from Market Street, first phase elements will include movable tables and chairs, as well as seasonal plantings. Shade will be a component of this scheme, in both the form of brightly-colored umbrellas and trees in planters. New activities will bring people to the space—music performances, yoga classes, and holiday celebrations. Future phases of improvements will be informed by a thoughtful and methodical observation of usage patterns around the first phase of improvements. Future capital investments will be crowdsourced, but we are starting by crowdsourcing a name.
