Fairmount has more green space than just about any other neighborhood in or around Center City, with lush parks and open areas. The Schuylkill River Trail stretches for twenty-six scenic miles, and there’s also Fairmount Park, which at 9,200 acres is one of the largest urban parks in the country. The neighborhood is considered a geographic gateway between Center City and North Philly, with the resident diversity and real estate mix to prove it. Fairmount is considerably more affordable than Center City, making it attractive to working singles, college students, and young families just starting out.
The western part of Fairmount has some of the highest percentages of owner-occupied housing in this part of Philadelphia, so finding a good rental can be a bit of an uphill task. Fairmount is very safe in terms of crime statistics; it’s not a place where you have to worry about walking home from work late at night.
The eating, drinking, and nightlife in Fairmount are superb. The food scene is thriving, offering a large variety of reasonable dining offerings of every variety. If you seek craft cocktails and hipster microbrews, the bars of the Art Museum Area have you covered. About half the restaurants here are BYOB, which really helps to stretch the budget. If you prefer cooking yourself, the local Whole Foods has you covered on high-quality ingredients.
The neighborhood is also in close proximity to Temple University, which, combined with its overall affordability and hip ambience, makes it a desirable place to live for students, who integrate right into life alongside the young professionals and families.
